The origins of Bauernsilvester go back a long way. In the past, many farmers and servants worked for their employers on New Year’s Eve itself and had little time to celebrate themselves. That is why the end of the year was simply brought forward to 30 December.
This gave rise to a tradition that to this day stands for down-to-earthness, solidarity and joie de vivre.
Unlike large New Year’s Eve celebrations, the Bauernsilvester has always been about getting together, music, dancing and good food. In the Salzkammergut in particular, this tradition is still celebrated with great enthusiasm.
